What is transport coordination, and why is it becoming more important?

Transport is becoming more dynamic. Organisations work with more carriers, more systems and a growing stream of real-time information. At the same time, expectations keep rising. Deliveries need to be predictable, customers expect up-to-date estimated times of arrival and deviations need an immediate response.

This shifts the real challenge. A solid plan still matters, but what increasingly makes the difference is how people work together and make decisions while transport is being executed.

Many organisations already have the information they need. The problem is that it sits across different systems and organisations. Planning data is stored in the transport management system (TMS), vehicle information comes from telematics, drivers communicate through an app and customers receive updates through a separate application or portal. Everyone sees part of the reality, but no one sees the complete operational picture.

In our view, that is where the next step in transport management begins.

What do we mean by transport coordination? At Simacan, we use the term transport coordination for the operational layer that connects people, processes and systems across organisational boundaries. It creates one shared operational view in which information from different sources becomes directly usable. That helps everyone involved make better decisions together.

Internationally, the term transport orchestration is also widely used. We do not present transport coordination as an official market definition. It is our way of describing real-time collaboration during transport execution.

From fragmented information to one shared operational view

A delay on the road is rarely the real problem. The real question is what happens next.

Take a home delivery where the customer is not at home. The delivery needs to be rescheduled. That immediately affects the rest of the trip. Stops move, estimated times of arrival change and the impact is felt by planners, drivers, customers and distribution locations.

When systems and organisations are not properly connected, it often takes too long before everyone has the same up-to-date picture. Information has to be passed on manually, systems fall out of sync and decisions are made using different versions of reality.

Transport coordination brings that information together. It does not replace existing systems. It connects people, processes and systems, then makes the information available in the right context. This is also the role Simacan plays: an operational layer on top of existing systems, where information from different sources comes together and becomes immediately useful for collaboration and decision-making.

The result is straightforward, but valuable. Everyone works from the same current picture. Adjusting the operation becomes part of the daily workflow, rather than a chain of phone calls and separate emails.

Is transport coordination the same as supply chain orchestration?

The term supply chain orchestration is increasingly used to describe an organisation’s ability to manage a logistics chain as one connected whole. PwC also highlights in its view on the future of transport and logistics that collaboration, shared data and end-to-end control are becoming more important.

We see transport coordination as the practical delivery of that idea.

Supply chain orchestration mainly describes what organisations want to achieve. Transport coordination explains how to organise it during daily execution. By connecting systems, processes and all parties involved in real time, you create a shared operational view that everyone can act on.

Why this matters now

Transport is not becoming simpler. New regulation, road charging, zero-emission zones, tighter delivery windows and rising costs make daily execution more dynamic. At the same time, more parties are involved in each transport movement.

That is why collaboration matters more than ever. Not only within one organisation, but also between shippers, carriers, distribution locations and customers.

Transport coordination helps all those parties work from the same current information. Not because data has value on its own, but because better information leads to better decisions.

And in the end, that is what logistics is all about.
